East African Influence: A Community Guide is a knowledge map of East African presence in the Twin Cities metro area. This map was one of 16 public art projects collectively titled "16 Space of Hope", that was completed in the Spring of 2003 and premiered at the Cedar Riverside Cultural Center on the West Bank of Minneapolis.
The Twin Cities retains the largest East African Population in North America, a population that includes mainly Somalis, but also Ethiopian and Eritrean immigrants. I mapped the location of their businesses and presence and was allocated a budget to print off 5,000 maps which I distributed throughout the city in order to instigate cross-cultural dialogue and understandings between these immigrant communities and the native Minnesotan population.
